A roofing calculator on your site keeps homeowners from bouncing to a national cost guide. There are three realistic ways to add one — here is what each actually costs you.
Option 1 — Build it yourself
Cost: $300–$1,500 one-time (or 10–30 hours of your time). Ongoing: you maintain the pricing data, update it every year, and fix it when it breaks.
You get full control, but roofing cost data changes (asphalt prices, material availability, local labor). A stale calculator produces wrong numbers and damages trust.
Option 2 — WordPress plugin
Cost: $0–$200/year, plus setup. Ongoing: plugin updates, conflicts with themes, and you still need to configure and maintain the cost tables.
Plugins are fine for simple quote forms, but most "calculator" plugins are generic form builders — not roofing-specific — so the output is either a single number or a lead form with no estimate.
Option 3 — Hosted embed
Cost: $49–$199/month. Ongoing: none — data and maintenance are handled for you.
You paste one iframe line. The calculator includes material types (asphalt, architectural, metal, tile, flat), roof size, pitch and removal options, plus state multipliers. The homeowner sees a range and a line-item breakdown; if they request local pricing, the lead is forwarded to you.
Comparison
| Build | Plugin | Hosted embed | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | $300–$1,500 | $0–$200/yr | $0 |
| Maintenance | You | You | Included |
| Roofing-specific data | You source it | Usually no | Included |
| Lead capture | Custom | Yes | Yes |
| Setup time | Days–weeks | Hours | 2 minutes |
Which one is right for you?
If roofing is 80%+ of your revenue and you want a custom experience, build it. If you already run WordPress and only need a quote form, a plugin may be enough. If you want a real cost estimate on your site this week without maintaining data, use a hosted embed.
