A homeowner researching a roof replacement is not ready to call. They want to know whether the number in their head is realistic. If your site cannot answer that, they leave — usually to a national cost guide that monetizes the same homeowner as a lead.
The three reasons homeowners leave
- No price signal. "Call for a free estimate" is a commitment. A range is not.
- No next step for the not-ready-yet visitor. Most visitors are 1–3 months out.
- No reason to return. Without a saved estimate or a follow-up, the visit is one-and-done.
What changes when you add a cost calculator
A calculator converts a browsing visitor into an informed one. They engage, get a number, and — if the tool asks only after showing the range — many will request local pricing. You also learn what they are planning (material, size, timing) before the first call.
Three things to get right
- Show the number first. No email gate before the estimate.
- Ask for ZIP, not address. Lower friction, enough to route the lead.
- Reply within the hour. Speed beats polish in home services.
How to add one this week
A hosted embed takes one line of HTML and gives you roofing, HVAC, septic, solar, insulation and nine other calculators, with leads forwarded to your inbox or CRM.
