2026 U.S. Home Project Cost Index

Planning ranges for 19 common home projects, adjusted by state cost multipliers. Every range is built from published contractor price ranges and a state labor/material multiplier — not from a single contractor quote. Use it to sanity-check bids before you hire.

How to use this index

  1. Find your project and note the national range.
  2. Multiply by your state multiplier (or use the state page calculator).
  3. Compare at least three itemized contractor quotes against the range.
  4. Ask what is excluded: permits, disposal, removal, code upgrades, financing.

This index is free and does not require an email. Ranges are planning estimates, not bids.
